Be a Hero, Stay Drug Free: Our School's Superhero Red Ribbon Week (October 26-30)

Every October, schools across the country celebrate Red Ribbon Week — the nation’s oldest drug prevention campaign. This year, our school is giving it a theme our students can’t resist: superheroes.

This year’s national Red Ribbon Week theme (National Family Partnership) is “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.” — which is exactly why our school went superhero.

The idea is simple and powerful. Superheroes stand for truth, strength, courage, and protecting others. Real-life heroes make the same kinds of choices every day — including choosing to stay drug free. All week long, each day has its own superhero theme with a message for students, and yes, I’m dressing the part right alongside them.

Here’s our full week (October 26–30), what each day teaches, and the shirt I’m wearing for it. If your school does Red Ribbon Week too, steal this idea — and grab a shirt to match.

Monday: Truth, Strength & Protection (Red, Blue & Yellow Day)

Monday kicks off the week with the classics: Superman and Supergirl Day. Students can dress as their favorite caped hero or just wear red, blue, and yellow.

The message: Superman and Supergirl stand for truth, strength, and protection. Real heroes make safe, responsible choices — and stand up against anything that can harm their bodies and minds, including drugs and unhealthy influences.

What I’m wearing: the pencil hero Be a Hero Stay Drug Free tee — a heroic pencil in Superman blue that fits the day without going full costume. Perfect for Monday morning bus duty.

Tuesday: Strength Means Self-Control (Green Day)

Tuesday is Hulk Day — students wear green or Hulk-inspired gear.

The message: This one’s my favorite for the classroom. The Hulk reminds us that real strength isn’t about losing control — it’s about making smart choices even when big emotions hit. Real heroes use self-control and choose healthy ways to cope instead of harmful behaviors. That’s a lesson that applies way beyond drug prevention.

What I’m wearing: the green smash Be a Hero Stay Drug Free tee. My students are going to lose it over this one.

Wednesday: Responsibility & Courage (Spider-Verse Day)

Wednesday is Spider-Verse Day — Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales, or just red-and-blue spider-themed clothes.

The message: Spider heroes show responsibility and courage by making the right choice even when it’s hard. Real-life heroes choose to stay drug free and protect their future. With great power comes great responsibility — and our students are starting to understand what that means.

What I’m wearing: the spiderweb Be a Hero Stay Drug Free tee — red and blue web-slinging style lettering. Subtle enough for a staff meeting, fun enough for the hallways.

Thursday: Halloween Costume Day

Thursday lands right before Halloween, so students get to wear their costumes to school (school-appropriate, no masks, no weapons — the usual guidelines).

The message: Even on Halloween, we celebrate being real-life heroes by making safe, respectful, and drug-free choices.

What I’m wearing: the Be a Hero Stay Drug Free shield tee — going full superhero for costume day with the bold red, blue, and yellow shield.

Friday: Stronger Together (Avengers Assemble Day)

We close the week with Avengers Assemble Day — students dress as any hero or coordinate with friends as a superhero team.

The message: Heroes are stronger together. Positive friendships and strong support systems help us make healthy choices and avoid negative influences, including drugs. What a way to end the week — reminding kids that the people around them matter.

What I’m wearing: the Together We Can Stay Drug Free tee — “Heroes are strong together” is the whole week’s message in one shirt.

Why This Theme Works

I’ve done Red Ribbon Week for years, and the superhero angle is the most engaged I’ve ever seen students. The daily themes give kids something concrete to hold onto — it’s not an abstract lecture about “bad choices,” it’s be like the heroes you already admire. Truth. Self-control. Courage. Friendship. Those are character lessons that outlast the week.

And honestly? Dressing up alongside them matters. When students see their teacher in the theme, it stops being “another school program” and starts being something we’re all in together.
